Front Load Washing Machines

Washing Machines – Top Loading V Front Loading? Which is the Best Washing Machine For Your Needs?

If you’re in the market to buy a new washing machine, it’s worth giving some thought to what each type can offer. In general:-

Practicalities

If you want to add something to the wash, you can simply lift up the lid of a top loader. With front loaders once the load’s going you often can’t open the door until the cycle finishes.

Top loaders can make your clothes tangle – annoying when it’s time to hang the washing out. But there’s more bending down involved with a front loader.

If you’re short of space, front loaders sit nicely under a bench, which can then serve other purposes, and a dryer can be easily stacked above.

Laundry Care

Top loaders have a central column which agitates the laundry, or an impeller – a “bump” at the base of the drum – to move it. There’s a school of thought that believes the motion a front loader uses to wash laundry by turning it in the water, is gentler on clothes and more efficient at cleaning.

Thermostatically controlled front loaders give predictable wash temperatures. The temperature of the wash in some top loaders is dependent on the water going into it.

Water Consumption

Whilst clothes are immersed in water in a top loader, front loaders tend to use less as clothes are rotated in the drum, and pass through the water.

Power

Front loaders generally use less power than a top loader with the same drum capacity. When they’re completing a wash cycle there’s not so much water to pump, heat and dispose of.

Speed

Top loaders usually wash laundry quickly – great if you’re on a mission to get it done and hung out – whilst front loaders tend to take longer to complete a normal wash cycle.

Detergent

Because less water is used in a front loader, the detergent you add to the washing machine is more concentrated when it reaches your clothes, so you don’t use as much.

Spin Speeds

Higher spin speeds can be achieved with front loaders, so laundry takes less time to dry when it comes out of the machine.

Price

Although prices have come down, the initial purchase price is likely to be more expensive for a front than a top loader.

You’ll find exceptions to these general rules. Manufacturers are responding to environmental concerns and popular demand, and the washing machines on the market are constantly being upgraded and improved. If you look carefully you’ll find, for instance, top loaders with reduced water consumption, and front loaders with quick wash options.

The choice is yours.
