Well we were now pretty convinced that we were looking for the best front load washing machine for the budget but we hadn’t yet dismissed a top loader, we still had to do some actual washing machine comparisons in the shops.

We now decided to look at the features available and see which ones were necessary and which ones would be nice to have if the price allowed. My sister said that she did not want to overdo the features as that could mean that the machine was very complicated which would very likely confuse her and it would more than likely mean that it was more likely to break down – something that she found very annoying.

She was keen to have a variable spin speed so that if she had woollens or delicate items in the wash she could lower the spin speed to protect them more. However she did feel that she would like at least 1000rpm available for more durable items so that they would dry more quickly.

My sister has sensitive skin so she was quite keen to have an extra rinse facility, she had hears it was great because it removed all the detergent from the clothes. However she said it was not an essential because she found that using a liquid detergent worked well anyway.

We looked into delayed start programs so that she could chose when the washer started up but whilst this could take advantage of cheap electricity at off peak times, she was a little unsure as to whether she wanted this feature that much.

We liked the look of the electronic displays, we loved the idea of being able to see easily what part of the program the washer was at and how long it would take to finish. We were surprised that some of them have LCD touch screens that let you program a wash using pop-up menus. It looked great to have no buttons and dials but we were pretty sure that this was one complication we probably would not end up with.

We found also that some models even include a feature that adds an extra rinse cycle if too much detergent has been taken into the wash. We thought this would be great but we found that it is usually only on the more expensive models.

We thought about speed combination’s, wash speeds and spin speeds and decided that probably about three combination’s would be enough for my sister’s needs. She did fancy having some sort of control over the amount of water used. She had had to guess with her old top loader and was determined that guessing was not going to happen in the future. There was so much to think about with these washing machine comparisons, we really had to think about all the options available and dismiss those that were not vital.

At this stage we’d spent nearly all day investigating the options but it had been well worth it, we were nearly ready to go shopping!

Right, so we had decided to buy a washing machine or a stackable washer dryer combo. It it was to be the latter, then a top loader machine was out of the question so we decided do some washing machine comparisons and decided which type was most suitable for our needs.

Top loader washing machines are the most sold in the US. We knew a lot about them generally. The clothes are washed by an agitator that turns on a vertical axis. On the other hand front loader machines work by tumbling the clothes in a tub that rotates on a horizontal axis. We found that there are a few exceptions to this but this was the general rule.

We then quickly realised that front loaders have one major drawback, they cost more than top loaders to buy. Some top loaders are very energy efficient these days but it definitely seemed that on the whole the front loader machines would save money over the years on energy costs for running.

We really thought about the running costs and discovered that washing machines are really costly pieces of equipment to run. We also realised that up to 90% of the energy used to wash a load of laundry actually comes from heating the water so we really needed a machine that washed efficiently at low temperatures.

We really needed to understand the energy guide labels on the machines so that we could really get a good idea of the running costs involved.. The labels show how much energy is consumed by that model measure in kWh and how the specific washing machine compares to similar models and an estimated early operating cost. We soon realised this is a valuable tool for washing machine comparisons as it the Department of Energy who calculates this information and not the manufacturer so it genuinely shows the best rated washing machine.
