When my sister rang and asked me to help her choose a new washing machine, I was not at all excited. The first thing we did was measure up the space in the kitchen. She had previously had a top loader machine but she was seriously considering changing to a front loader in order to make more use of the space by extending her worktop or even putting a dryer on top of the new washer.

She had a standard width space so a larger machine was not practical. It wasn’t even necessary – there is only her and her husband there now and she does not need any extra capacity. We briefly discussed a compact machine but the space saved would not be particularly useful and when the family visited she was worried that she would be washing too many loads. We did find that the water and energy use per kilogram of washing are often lower for the very big machines but this is only true if you fill them up to capacity. They use a lot of water and if you don’t fill them, a lot of it would be wasted.

When I realised that she would like an electric dryer, I asked if she had ever thought about a washing machine dryer combo. Whilst she had thought of a stackable washer and dryer, she had not thought of one unit which was both washer and dryer. A unit like this would be cheaper than buying a washing machine and a separate dryer although we quickly realized that if something was to go wrong with one of the units, then the other probably would not work either.

We looked up a few and discovered that many of them would take a full size wash but not the same size load for drying. Whilst we were thinking along these lines, we realized that the laundry would take longer with this type of machine. With two machines, the first wash load could be drying whilst the second one was washing. We therefore decided that this was not what she wanted.

We then decided to think about a stackable combination. This option was very viable although it would limit her choice of washing machine and this was the most important piece of equipment. It would certainly be space saving and if one or the other item developed a fault, it would not affect the other. This was definitely something to consider when we got to the shops. We also looked at some of the most popular makes – Maytag, Frigidaire, Bosch, Hotpoiint but decided not to make any decisions about manufacturer until we knew more about the features we thought necessary.

Once we had reduced our choices we were also going to think about the cost and availability of spares and repairs – forward planning was the way to go if we were to find the best washing machine for her.

Although they comprise less than 10 percent of the American market, the trend towards front-load clothes washers is increasing due to consumers’ awareness of the environmental footprint left by energy inefficient appliances.

Front-load washers unarguably use less water, detergent, and energy but of course they are not perfect for everyone. There are advantages and disadvantages to consider before rushing out and purchasing one.

Advantages

Front-load washers use only 16-25 gallons per load, which is about 40% the amount that top-loaders use. This can save as much as 7,000 gallons of water a year. Because they use less water, they also require less electricity to heat the water, resulting in more energy savings.

Since front-load washers use less water, they require less detergent. A low-sudsing detergent is required but uses only a tablespoon per load compared to a cup for top-loaders. The price of HE detergents is comparable with standard detergents.

Front-load washers spin at over 1000 rpm in American-made machines, and up to 2000 rpm in European models. This is considerably faster than the 600-700 rpm spin cycle on top-load washers. The result is that clothing comes out drier thereby reducing the drying time. This saves energy and helps the dryer keep pace with the washer during multiple-load washing.

The large capacity accommodates loads up to 30 percent larger than conventional top-load machines because there is no agitator to consume space. This allows plenty of room for large items such as several pairs of jeans, sleeping bags or comforters.

Front loading washers are by design gentler on clothing due to the tumbling action. As the drum turns, the gravity pulls the clothing to the bottom. Top loading washers have an agitator connected to a gearbox, which twists the clothing and rotates it from the bottom of the tub towards the top.

For those with limited space, some models allow the dryer to be stacked on top of the washer and fit into a bathroom or closet. Models with controls mounted on the front can be installed under counters.

Some states offer water and energy efficiency rebates or tax credits on the purchase of front loading machines.

Disadvantages

The price for a front-load washer is 30-40 percent more than an equivalent top-loading machine. So the initial cost of a front-loading machine is more expensive but if the machine is used for more than a couple of years, these initial costs are generally earned back with substantial energy, water, and detergent savings.

Vibration can become a problem for washers that are installed on second story floors instead of concrete basement flooring.

Even though the manufacturer’s recommendations to prevent the smell of mold from accumulating are followed very closely, many owners complain that doing so is no guarantee.

Front-loaders have a hard time washing small loads because the effectiveness of tumbling and compression is proportional to the size of the wash load.

The length of time to complete a wash cycle is longer for front-load washer but the clothes come out with 7 percent less water moisture due to the high speed of the spin cycle. This means less time in the drier.

Finally, anyone with back problems should be aware that front-load washers are low to the ground requiring more bending over to retrieve the clothes. Manufacturers now offer bases that raise the washer, but at an additional cost.

As I walk through stores selling appliances, I see a larger selection of front-load washers on display and I have noticed the price steady declining into the more affordable range. I am of course a fan of any technology that decreases our environmental footprint by using less water and electricity. Therefore, if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, I would encourage anyone looking for a new washer to shop around for the many affordable front-loaders on the market today.

As well as the water conservation front loads are much gentler on your clothes. The main reasons for this are because they have a drum with no agitator, and your clothes will not get caught and stretch.

While front loaders hit the lead with their water conservation, they fall back again with their longer wash cycles. There are models out these days with quick wash cycles; however this is only effective with lightly soiled fabrics like sheets, as heavily soiled loads will not clean properly.

Why Front Load Washers Need HE Detergent

Since the introduction of the front-loading washing machine into the North American market their sales have literally exploded. Like most people, you probably bought one because of the suggested savings.

The claims about their efficiency are true. When operated properly you can save energy, water, and money. Plus they do a fabulous job of washing your clothes.

But, using the wrong detergent can quickly destroy any hopes of savings. Along with the front loaders amazing popularity has come a tremendous amount of misunderstanding about the detergent they require.

A front-loading washing machine needs a special detergent. It’s called HE (High Efficiency) detergent. Without HE detergent your washer will not clean properly. Using regular detergent may even cause your front loader mechanical problems.

HE detergent is a type of non-sudsing detergent. In fact, while operating, the machine almost appears not to have any detergent inside.

Unfortunately, we have become so used to seeing suds in our old washing machines that we mistakenly relate the presence of suds to proper operation. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

An old fashioned top loader washes your clothes by constantly tumbling them through a full tub of water. Your front loader works differently.

In a front loader your clothes are picked up by the vanes inside the drum, lifted to the top of the drum, and then dropped into water laying at the bottom of the drum. This collision of clothes and water will dislodge the dirt from the clothing fibers. Later the drum stops turning, the water flows out the bottom of the drum via the pump, taking both water and dirt out to the household drain. Finally the drum is spun at very high speed to remove the final amounts of water, dirt and detergent from the clothes. This front-loading method of cleaning your clothes is both simple and dependable.

But, this simple method stops working if there are too many suds being produced by your laundry detergent.

If you use regular detergent in your front loader excess suds will be produced by the interaction of the detergent and tumbling water. These unwanted suds will accumulate at the bottom of the wash drum where they will lie on top of the water. Within minutes these suds will take the form of a big fluffy cushion. This cushion hinders clothes from reaching the water. As your clothes fall from the top of the drum to the bottom they hit the suds cushion rather than the water. The result is a very poor wash.

Even owners of front loaders who are using the correct detergent can misunderstand how to use it properly. Not seeing any suds they think they require more detergent. They keep increasing the amount used per load until suds finally appear. This can be a costly mistake that again results in a poor wash.

Using too much detergent is as bad as using the wrong detergent. Extreme amount of detergent can produce symptoms such as leaking, vibration, noisy operation, and poor spinning.

If you have been using the wrong detergent (or the proper type incorrectly) in your front load washer try the following suggestions. Run the machine through a number of cycles using hot water. This should help expel the old detergent. It usually takes 3 or 4 cycles to wash away the old detergent accumulated inside the machine. Or add a product that will remove the build-up of old detergent. One such product is called GLISTEN. It is available through most appliance parts wholesalers. Some grocery store chains now include it in their laundry detergent section.

As a matter of fact it is a good idea to use a cleaner such as GLISTEN in your front loader every few months. It is an inexpensive form of regular maintenance. A small amount should also be added to the detergent dispenser drawer to remove any residue from this area.

So if you think your front loader is not working as well as anticipated, look to your laundry detergent. If it does not say HE on the label — switch immediately.

Then purchase a box of the proper HE type detergent and you may be pleasantly surprised.
